350mm Graphite Electrode Manufacturing Process

The graphite electrode manufacturing process mainly includes the steps of raw material preparation, mixing, molding, roasting, impregnation and graphitization, which are described as follows:

 

Raw material preparation: Select petroleum coke, needle coke, asphalt and other binders and mix them in a certain proportion.

 

Casting: The mixed material is extruded into a cylindrical electrode blank.

Roasting

The blank is roasted at high temperature to fully carbonize it.

Impregnation

The roasted blank is placed in an impregnation basin to fully impregnate the electrode and improve its conductivity.

Graphitization

Through high temperature treatment with electricity, the carbon atoms are rearranged, and the graphitization process is completed.

 

350mm Graphite Electrode Usage Requirements

 

When the electric furnace is charged, the bulk charge should be installed at the bottom of the furnace to prevent the furnace material from collapsing and breaking the electrode. In the smelting process, non-conductive objects such as lime should be avoided to accumulate directly under the electrode, otherwise, the electrode will be energized and even the electrode will be broken.

 

Pay attention to the position of the furnace cover. If the furnace cover is misaligned, the furnace cover will be scratched when the electrode is lifted, resulting in damage to the electrode.

 

When connecting the electrode, if there is any defect of the connector bolt, replace it and then connect it.

 

After the electrodes are connected, if there is a gap on the connecting surface, be sure to find out the cause. It can be used after the gap is eliminated. The electrodes must be used vertically. Do not tilt.

 

The electrode holder should be sandwiched between the upper and lower guard lines of the topmost graphite electrode. It is forbidden to be caught in the warning line (the joint hole) and the middle electrode, otherwise, the electrode column may be broken.

Q: Why do the 350mm graphite electrodes need to be replaced regularly?

A: The graphite (carbon) anode reacts with the oxygen produced resulting in them being burnt away over time and hence then requiring periodic replacement.

A: Some of the oxygen reacts with the carbon in the graphite to form carbon dioxide. by consuming the anode slowly. Thus the anodes have to be replaced periodically or a number of graphite electrode as anodes have to be used.

A: All electrodes require periodic cleaning to remove buildup of material on the conductive metal surfaces. This buildup is normal and a byproduct of the electroporation process. Rinse electrode contact area in warm water. Wash with dilute detergent (1% V/V) and rinse with deionized water.

Q: How do you polish 350mm graphite electrodes?

A: Polish electrode first with the 400 grit size sandpaper. Use a separate piece of sandpaper for each electrode. Gently wipe the surface using a Kimwipe to remove excess graphite dust. Repeat the polishing step, but use 1500 grit size sandpaper.
