Why Graphite Electrodes are used in batteries?

Graphite is the dominant anode material in lithium-ion batteries due to its unique electrochemical properties.

During charging, lithium ions intercalate (insert) into the graphite's layered structure, storing energy; during discharging, these ions deintercalate, releasing electrons to generate current. Graphite's advantages include:

(1) ​​High Capacity​​: It can host ~0.33 lithium ions per carbon atom, balancing energy density and stability;

(2) ​​Electrical Conductivity​​: Facilitates efficient electron transport;

(3) ​​Stability​​: Resists expansion/contraction during cycling, prolonging battery life;

(4) ​​Cost-Effectiveness​​: Abundant and cheaper than alternatives like silicon (which swells dramatically when lithiated).

While silicon anodes offer higher theoretical capacity, graphite remains preferred for commercial batteries due to its reliability and scalability.
