Applications of 600mm Graphite Electrodes
Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs)
Graphite electrodes, size 600mm, are crucial in EAFs, where they help create the intense heat necessary to melt scrap steel and other raw materials.
Ladle Furnaces
After the initial melting process in EAFs, steel is often transferred to ladle furnaces for further refining. The 600mm graphite electrodes are used here to maintain the molten steel at high temperatures, ensuring the removal of impurities and improving steel quality.
High-temperature industrial applications
Beyond steel making, 600mm graphite electrodes are employed in other industries that require sustained high temperatures, such as silicon production and other metallurgical processes.
Raw Material Preparation
The first step in the graphite electrode manufacturing process is sourcing the right raw materials. Graphite electrodes are made from a blend of petroleum coke, pitch coke, and coal tar pitch. These materials are carefully selected for their purity and consistency.
Mixing and Extruding
Once the raw materials have been sourced, they are mixed together in a large mixer. The mixture is then extruded into the desired shape and size using a high-pressure extruder. The extruded product is then cut to the required length.
Baking
The next step in the manufacturing process is baking. The extruded product is placed in a baking oven and heated to extremely high temperatures (up to 3000 degrees Celsius) in an oxygen-free environment. This process is called graphitization and is what gives the graphite electrode its unique properties.
Impregnation
The baked electrodes undergo multiple cycles of impregnation with coal tar pitch under pressure to enhance their density and conductivity.
Rebaking
After impregnation, the electrodes are rebaked at higher temperatures to further improve their mechanical and electrical properties.
Graphitization
The electrodes are subjected to extremely high temperatures of 2500–3000°C in an Acheson or LWG furnace to convert the carbon structure into graphite, enhancing conductivity and thermal resistance.
Quality Control
Quality control is an essential part of the graphite electrode manufacturing process. This includes testing for density, strength, and electrical conductivity.

Please clean the electrode threads first before connection, then screw the nipple into one end of the electrode. Don't touch the thread, and don't put the joint directly into the working electrode on furnace.
Before connecting, clean the screw thread of electrode with compressed air free of oil and water. Use special caliper to tight electrode according to rated torque by mechanical way, hydraulic pressure or wind pressure equipment should also be available.
Use revolved resilient hanger and put soft cushions under the electrode nipple to avoid breakage of thread. When connecting, the electrode is aligned with the center axis of the nipple to which is the connected.
To avoid the electrode breakage, insulating materials should not be put into the furnace. The working current of electrode must be conformity with the allowable current of electrode in the instructions. In order to avoid electrode breakage, put the large materials in lower part and small materials on the upper part.
Clamp holder should be placed out of the alarm line. (Note: clamp holder should not clamp at alarm line zone, or the middle of the electrode, as it is easy to cause the rupture of the electrode) Clamp holder and interfaces of the electrode must be cleaned regularly to keep good touch with electrode. Cooling water jacket of the clamp holder should be tight to prevent water leakage.

Wooden Crates or Pallets
Graphite electrodes are mostly packed in heavy-duty pallets or sturdy wooden crates. These pallets or crates are made to take in electrode weight and length, which can vary based on size.
Foam and Cushioning
Materials for cushioning like soft padding or foam, are placed all around graphite electrodes to take in the vibrations and shocks movement or transportation brings.
