What are the key technical differences between RP, HP, and UHP grades of EAF Graphite Electrodes?

The performance gap between RP, HP, and UHP graphite electrodes stems from their material composition and manufacturing precision, which directly impact their electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties:

Resistivity: RP electrodes have the highest resistivity (~65–75 μΩ·m), leading to greater energy loss as heat during operation. HP electrodes reduce this to ~55–65 μΩ·m, minimizing waste. UHP electrodes achieve the lowest resistivity (<55 μΩ·m), maximizing current efficiency and reducing power consumption.

Bulk Density: Higher density enhances thermal conductivity and mechanical stability. RP electrodes (~1.68–1.70 g/cm³) are less dense, making them prone to oxidation and breakage. HP (~1.70–1.72 g/cm³) and UHP (>1.72 g/cm³) electrodes use denser graphite, improving resistance to thermal stress and prolonging service life.

Flexural Strength: Critical for withstanding mechanical stress during insertion/removal and high-temperature expansion. RP electrodes (~7 MPa) are weaker, while HP (~8 MPa) and UHP (>10 MPa) electrodes offer superior strength, reducing fracture risks in large EAFs.

Particle Size & Purity: UHP electrodes use finer graphite particles (<15 μm) and lower impurity levels (e.g., sulfur <0.05%), ensuring tighter microstructures and consistent performance. HP and RP electrodes allow slightly coarser particles, balancing cost and performance.
