Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) electrodes, sized 100–750 mm, are specialized conductors that form the operational backbone of EAF steelmaking, where they convert electrical energy into intense heat via arcing between the electrode tip and molten metal bath.
Primary Functions:
•Arc Generation: The electrode tip, descending into the furnace, creates an electric arc (ionized plasma) that melts 50–300-ton scrap charges in 40–90 minutes. For large EAFs (200+ tons), 600–750 mm electrodes maintain stable arcs despite massive scrap volumes.
•Heat Distribution: Tapered profiles (1–2° angles) ensure even current spread, preventing localized overheating (which erodes the tip) and cold spots (which slow melting).
•Chemical Refinement: Current flow induces electromagnetic stirring, enhancing mixing between molten steel and slag to accelerate desulfurization (S <0.005%), dephosphorization, and inclusion removal.
Technical Specifications:
•Size-Current Correlation: 100–200 mm (10–30 kA, lab EAFs); 300–500 mm (30–80 kA, mid-sized EAFs); 500–750 mm (80–120 kA, mega-EAFs).
•Material & Manufacturing: High-purity graphite (ash <0.3%) is extruded, baked (1,000–1,200°C), and impregnated (with pitch) to reduce porosity (<15%) and enhance density (1.65–1.75 g/cm³). Isostatic pressing ensures uniform strength, critical for large electrodes.
