One of the main reasons why graphite electrodes require special surface treatment: Improved oxidation resistance

Graphite electrodes are prone to reacting with oxygen at high temperatures, producing carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide, which leads to oxidation and surface degradation. This oxidation not only reduces the electrode's diameter but also decreases its conductivity and mechanical strength, thus affecting production efficiency. To extend the electrode's lifespan, an anti-oxidation coating is typically applied to its surface. Common anti-oxidation coating materials include:

Ceramic coatings: such as alumina and zirconia. These materials have high melting points and good chemical stability, effectively preventing direct contact between oxygen and graphite.

Silicon carbide coatings: Silicon carbide has excellent oxidation resistance and wear resistance, making it suitable for high-temperature environments.

Phosphate coatings: These form a dense phosphate protective film on the electrode surface, inhibiting oxidation reactions.

These coatings not only reduce oxidation loss but also improve the electrode's stability in high-temperature environments.
