What is the difference between graphite electrode and carbon electrode?

 

 

The primary distinction lies in their composition, manufacturing processes, and electrochemical behavior. Graphite electrodes are typically made from high-purity petroleum coke or pitch coke through graphitization, resulting in superior electrical conductivity and thermal resistance, which suit high-power applications like EAF steelmaking.

 

In contrast, carbon electrodes often refer to broader carbon-based materials, including natural graphite or carbon composites, which may contain impurities like clay and resin, leading to lower conductivity and mechanical strength.

 

Electrochemically, carbon electrodes can function as both cathodes (reducing ions) and anodes (oxidizing ions) in reactions, while graphite electrodes primarily facilitate oxidation processes due to their stable crystalline structure.16 Moreover, graphite electrodes are more durable and costly to produce, whereas carbon electrodes are simpler to manufacture but prone to faster degradation under harsh conditions.
