How do graphite electrodes work?

Graphite electrodes function by conducting electricity and enabling electrochemical reactions across various applications. In steelmaking, they act as conductive bridges in EAFs, where electrical energy arcs from the electrode tip to the scrap metal, generating intense heat that melts the material at temperatures exceeding 3000°C.

For battery systems, such as lithium-ion cells, graphite anodes work through intercalation: lithium ions embed into the graphite layers during charging and de-intercalate during discharging, a process supported by the electrode's layered structure that allows reversible ion insertion.

This mechanism reduces resistance at the solid-electrolyte interface (SEI), enhancing charge transfer efficiency.
