Why is the electrode joint a critical component of the steelmaking process?
The joint is the weakest link in the entire electrode column, yet it bears the most weight (mechanically and electrically). Common problems include:
• Loosening and fracture: Improper tightening torque or thermal stress can damage threads and fracture the joint, leading to production interruptions and significant losses.
• Oxidation burnout: Joint gaps are more susceptible to oxidation, forming "pencil-point" grooves, which weaken the joint and cause it to break.
• Poor current transmission: Loose connections can lead to arcing, localized overheating, and joint burnout. Therefore, it is imperative to use a torque wrench to clean and tighten the joints according to specifications.
