Graphite electrode classification: general-purpose graphite electrodes (RP); high-power graphite electrodes (HP); quasi-ultra-high-power graphite electrodes (SHP); ultra-high-power graphite electrodes (UHP).
(1) Used in electric arc furnaces
Graphite electrode raw materials are primarily used in electric furnace steelmaking. Electric furnace steelmaking involves using graphite electrodes to introduce working current into the furnace chamber. The strong current generates harmful arc discharge in the gas atmosphere below the electrodes, utilizing the thermal energy from the arc to perform smelting. The size of the capacity is determined by the configuration of graphite electrodes with different diameters, which serve as reference electrodes for continuous use, connected via the electrode joints. High-purity graphite used as metal electrodes accounts for approximately 70–80% of China's total graphite electrode consumption.
(2) Used in mineral electric furnaces
Used for producing primarily iron-based non-ferrous metals, pure silicon, yellow phosphorus, calcium carbide, and copper matte, its advantage lies in the fact that the conductive electrodes are buried in the scrap material below, resulting in heat generation not only from the arc between the electrodes and scrap material but also from the resistance of the scrap material as current flows through it.
(3) Used in electric furnaces
Graphite furnaces used in the production of graphite materials, melting furnaces with soundproofing technology, and furnaces used in the production of carbon-carbon composites are all electric furnaces. The storage compartments inside the furnace serve both as heating resistors and as the objects being heated.
(4) Many graphite electrode blanks are also processed into various clamping pots, high-purity graphite crucibles, hot-pressing molds, and vacuum furnace heaters, among other irregularly shaped products.
It is also important to note that among the three high-temperature composite materials-graphite electrodes, graphite molds, and graphite crucibles-high-purity graphite is prone to oxidation and combustion reactions at high temperatures, leading to the formation of a carbon layer on the surface and increasing the porosity and structural looseness of the material.
