What maintenance practices are critical for graphite electrodes in EAF and LF furnaces?
Proactive maintenance extends electrode life and ensures uninterrupted operations:
Length Monitoring: Regularly measure electrode length (via laser or mechanical gauges) to avoid overextension. EAF electrodes are typically replaced at 10–15% residual length; LFs at 20–25% to prevent breakage.
Alignment and Centering: Misaligned electrodes cause uneven current distribution, increasing erosion. Use laser alignment tools to ensure electrodes are centered in the furnace roof, minimizing bending stress.
Slag and Oxide Removal: After tapping, clean electrodes of adhering slag or oxide layers using wire brushes or compressed air to prevent conductive bridges that cause arcing or short circuits.
Mechanical Protection: Handle electrodes with care to avoid chipping or cracking (graphite is brittle). Use padded clamps and avoid dropping during installation/removal.
Atmospheric Control: Inject inert gases (e.g., argon) around electrodes in LFs to reduce oxidation. In EAFs, limit oxygen ingress via door seals to slow surface degradation.
Preventive Replacement Scheduling: Track electrode consumption rates (kg/ton of steel) to predict replacement needs, avoiding unplanned downtime.
