Is Graphite Electrode magnetic?
Pure graphite is non-magnetic. Its atomic structure consists of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice, with no unpaired electrons-this lack of net magnetic moment prevents the material from exhibiting ferromagnetism or paramagnetism.
However, graphite can become weakly magnetic if contaminated with magnetic impurities (e.g., iron, nickel) during manufacturing or use. In industrial settings, most graphite electrodes are highly purified, minimizing magnetic properties.
Thus, under normal conditions, graphite electrodes do not attract or repel magnetic fields, making them suitable for applications where magnetism could interfere (e.g., in certain smelting processes).
