When steel mills choose graphite electrodes (e.g., 400mm HP vs. 400mm UHP), what other factors should they consider besides power rating?

In addition to power rating, the following actual requirements should be considered:
• EAF process: If "foamy slag + submerged arc operation" is used, the low energy consumption advantage of UHP electrodes is more significant. If the process is more complex (e.g., frequent arc interruption), HP electrodes may be more economical.

• Grid Capacity: UHP electrodes require high-power transformers (e.g., a 100-ton furnace requires ≥80 MVA). Forcing UHP electrodes into a small grid capacity will result in unstable power supply.

• Cost Budget: The unit price of UHP electrodes is 1.5-2 times that of HP, but long-term consumption is lower (cost per ton of steel can be reduced by 20%-30%). The payback period for investment needs to be calculated.

• Charge Structure: If the primary charge is scrap steel (requiring high arc heat), UHP is preferred; if the charge is combined with molten iron (sufficient heat), HP may be sufficient.
