The 300mm graphite electrode is a workhorse in industrial electrochemistry, valued for its balanced size, conductivity, and cost-effectiveness. Its applications span sectors where medium-to-large scale electrical conductivity and thermal resilience are critical.
In electric arc furnaces (EAFs) for steelmaking, 300mm electrodes are common in mid-sized furnaces (100–200 tons), where they conduct high currents to generate arcs that melt scrap metal. Their 300mm diameter minimizes current density, reducing heat concentration at the tip and extending service life. For example, a 300mm high-power (HP) electrode in a 150-ton EAF operates at 80–100 kA, melting scrap in 75–90 minutes-faster than older furnaces using smaller electrodes.
Aluminum smelting also relies on 300mm pre-baked graphite electrodes. In electrolytic cells, their high purity (sulfur < 0.3%) prevents contamination of molten aluminum, while thermal stability (withstanding 950°C) ensures consistent anode performance. This reduces downtime and improves cell efficiency, critical for aluminum producers aiming to lower energy costs.
Additionally, 300mm graphite electrodes are used in electrical discharge machining (EDM) for mid-sized components, such as automotive molds or industrial tooling. Their ability to maintain shape under spark erosion and conduct moderate currents makes them ideal for producing deep, detailed cavities in hardened steel or titanium.
Across these applications, the 300mm size strikes a balance: larger than 200mm electrodes (reducing replacement frequency) but smaller than 600mm ones (lower material and handling costs). This versatility solidifies its role in mid-capacity industrial operations.
