Choosing the correct grade (RP, HP, or UHP) for EAF electrode replacement directly impacts operational reliability, energy costs, and productivity:

 

​Performance Mismatch Risks​​: Installing an RP electrode in a high-power EAF (≥100 tons) causes overheating due to its higher resistivity, leading to premature breakage or unstable arcs. Conversely, using an over-spec UHP electrode in a small EAF (<50 tons) wastes resources without performance benefits.

 

​Furnace Compatibility​​: UHP electrodes require precise current control and low-ash refractory linings to maximize lifespan. HP/RP electrodes tolerate more variability but limit a furnace's ability to upgrade to higher power inputs.

 

​Economic Impact​​: While UHP electrodes have 20–30% higher upfront costs than HP, their extended service life (15–20 heats vs. 10–12 for RP) and energy savings (lower electricity consumption) reduce lifecycle costs for large EAFs. Mismatched grades can increase downtime and repair expenses, negating potential savings.
