What is an antioxidant coated graphite electrode?
Antioxidation coated graphite electrode is a coated electrode made by spraying an oxidation-resistant coating on the surface of a graphite electrode. The preparation process is to fuse a thin layer of aluminum-based metal ceramic on the surface of the processed graphite electrode. This coating material, which is both conductive and oxidation-resistant, is formed by the co-melting of aluminum and refractory mud of various components. Its characteristics and functions are:
(1) It provides an efficient oxygen-insulating layer and a highly conductive outer layer for the electrode, thereby preventing oxidation of the electrode surface and reducing the net consumption of the electrode, and reducing the current density inside the electrode.
(2) The antioxidant coating can withstand relatively high temperatures without melting, and the decomposition temperature of the coating is above 1850℃C.
(3) The coating is well bonded to the surface of the electrode and has a similar linear expansion coefficient.
(4) The conductivity of the coating is higher than that of the graphite electrode substrate, so most of the secondary current will be carried by the coating, which can reduce the resistance thermal effect at the electrode joint and increase the current density through the electrode.
Since the addition of the anti-oxidation coating will increase the electrode production cost by 8%-10%, and the electric furnace steel plant needs to modify the clamp that holds the electrode on the electric furnace when using this type of graphite electrode, and sparks are easily generated on the contact surface between the electrode and the clamp during use, the anti-oxidation coated graphite electrode has not been widely promoted and applied so far.
